Robie Robertson and Levon -- You are the BEST!!!!!!
slowride503 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
This is incorrect. Robbie Robertson wrote this song in 1969. Joan Baez covered it in 1971. Check out "The Last Waltz" or just do a quick google search and you will see.

i know the lyrics back to front and i know there is nothing in them that says anything racist, of course not. however, we all know the backdrop of the civil war so its bound to make people take sides. thats all im saying. and can i just say once again that i love this song and the band generally.

Is Levan and Robbie the only two surviving members of the BAND?
boymisfit (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
idiot. why do people post stuff they don't know anything about?
gstoflectricity (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
the band didn't write this song...it's a traditional. they just arranged it. joan baez sang it before them, and she got it from traditional folk music.

nah, I don't judge the song for it, it's still good.I just get weirded out when people write in first person trying to "take on the character" of a culture they're not part of.hey, everyone got pissed but you lolcongratulations

I agree rntrammell, reading the lyrics there is nothing racially provocative at all. This is such an emotionally charged issue for a lot of southerners and alike. The song is powerful and truly special! This from a proud "Yankee" |
